Contract amendment template

Published 2026-11-02 · SignedChange Guides

A contract amendment is a written document that changes specific terms of an existing agreement while keeping the rest in place. Use one when you need to change payment terms, deadlines, rates, duration or responsibilities, without rewriting the whole contract.

Here's a simple template and guidance on using it. It's general information, not legal advice.

Amendment, addendum or change order?

People use these words loosely. Broadly: an amendment changes existing terms; an addendum adds new terms or sections; a change order adjusts the work, price or schedule within a project. In practice, what matters is that the document is clear and signed by both parties. For project changes, see our change order template.

Tips for a clear amendment

Common reasons to amend

Rate or price changes, extended deadlines, new deliverables, changed payment schedule, adding a person or business, renewing for a new term, or changing working hours. Landlords and tenants use amendments for rent or lease changes; see landlord and tenant agreement changes in writing.

When a verbal change already happened

If you've already agreed a change by phone or in person, write the amendment now to capture it, and get both signatures. Our guide on putting a verbal agreement in writing explains what to include.

Example: amending a freelance retainer

Suppose a social media manager has a retainer of $400 per month for 12 posts. The client wants 20 posts and stories from next month. An amendment might read: "Clause 2 (Services) is replaced with: 'The Provider will create and publish 20 posts and 8 stories per month.' Clause 4 (Fees) is replaced with: 'The monthly fee is $600, payable on the 1st of each month.' Effective date: 1 September 2026. All other terms remain unchanged."

This is clear about exactly which clauses change, the new wording, and when it starts. Anyone reading the original agreement plus the amendment can understand the current deal without guessing.

For employment changes (hours, pay, role), many countries have specific rules about notice and written statements, so check local requirements. For simple commercial changes between two businesses, a clear signed amendment like the one above is usually the right tool.

Signing amendments quickly

Amendments often stall because getting signatures is inconvenient. Electronic signing removes that. SignedChange lets you type the change, send a private link by WhatsApp or email, and both sides get the same dated PDF with a record of who signed and when. It's ideal for everyday amendments; for complex or high-value contracts, have a lawyer review the wording.

Record your next change in 60 seconds

Describe the change, set the price, and send a signing link by WhatsApp or email. Both sides get the same signed, dated PDF. Your first 3 documents are free — no account needed.

Frequently asked questions

Does a contract amendment need to be signed by both parties?

Usually yes, and many contracts require it. A one-sided change is generally not enough.

Can I amend a contract by email?

Sometimes an email exchange can show agreement, but a clear signed amendment is much stronger evidence and avoids doubt.

How many times can a contract be amended?

There's typically no fixed limit. Number each amendment so the history is clear.

Do I need a witness?

Most everyday amendments don't, but some types of agreement do in some countries. Check local rules.
